Field Trip: Our field trip was amazing! We had the opportunity to explore different types of technologies that help to make life a bit easier throughout the seasons (snowshoes, sleds, bikes, fans, etc.). We were able to participate in a workshop that helped us to better understand how the sun, and the earth’s proximity to the sun, impacts our seasons. Best of all, we were given the opportunity to learn alongside our friends. We were able to ask each other questions, engage in activities, and make lasting memories. Math:

fun games to play at home!Check out some of these posts with great ideas to help kids learn their word wall words, other everyday words and even math concepts. You can even do these activities with your French words. Make it fun and play with words.
10-simple-sight-word-activities Here are some other great ideas found on this blog Make words with small objects! Favorites are jewels (Dollar Store and Dollar Tree are great places to get these items). Which Word is Right? Write 3 spellings of the sight word, only 1 correct. Have your child erase the wrong words, leave the correct spelling! Dry Erase Writing Simply have your child write the word you call out on a dry erase board. Allow him/her to look at the word wall if needed to keep things positive. You could do this on the IPAD or computer or even a Boogie board. Make words out of play dough or pipe cleaners Rainbow Writing The kids also like using different coloured gel pens and so they could write the words in different colours. You could even buy the paint for windows and they could write their WWW on their window in their room. Search and Read Write words on post it notes or index cards and post them around the house. Word Search Here is a website that you can make your own word search. You can either print it out or have your child play it on the computer. Make a word search puzzle Concentration or Matching Game You can use this game for math concepts (numbers, shapes, patterns...) and language (French or English words). Put words or math concepts on index cards. You could make 2 sets and they have to match the same words or match the number word to the number, or shape to the shape word etc. Play cards Go fish using words or math concepts. The Grade One team has also come up with a list of apps that we will/may use in the classroom. Some are free apps and some you do need to pay for. Please choose the ones that best suits your child's needs if you are interested. This is not obligatory, just another way to help your child with the use of technology. As well, we use Starfall and Raz-kids regularly to help with language Math: We have started to explore patterning. We are learning about AB and ABB patterns with one changing attribute Language: We are learning about super sentences! Super Sentences…

Warm wishes this Thanksgiving weekend, Ms. Casey This past week has helped to teach us what it truly means to be a community. We have talked about the importance of sharing our support, love and time to those in need. At the beginning of the week, we created thank you notes for all those who spent countless hours keeping our community safe. We posted a picture of these thank you notes on Twitter and mentioned all those who we wanted to thank. CBC Radio saw our post and ask if they could interview a few of our students. Students shared why they wanted to show their gratitude. I have shared the link to the article below. You will be able to see pictures and listen to the interview. I am so proud of our students :) Field Trip and Volunteering: I have sent home a permission form for our very first field trip. This field trip will take place on Tuesday, November 13th. We will be looking for parent volunteers to help us with this trip. All parents wishing to volunteer for fields trips or within the school are now required by the Ottawa Catholic School Board to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check. I will send home the Vulnerable Sector Check form to all those who wish to volunteer for the field trip or within the school at any point throughout the school year. That being said, I am looking for a few volunteers to come into our classroom on a weekly or monthly basis to help support our reading and writing! Please let me if you are interested in this. Monthly Calendar: I have sent home our Monthly Calendar for October. In an effort to save paper, I would like to move away from sending home a paper copy each month. Calendars will be posted on our class website under the Monthly Calendar tab at the beginning of each month. Please let me know if you would like a paper copy sent home. Deep Learning Project: What does it mean to care? Over the course of the year, we will be investigating what it means to care for ourselves, our local and global community, and environment. I have sent a note home about how we would like to support those impacted by last Friday’s tornado in Dunrobin. I have also posted a PDF version of the note below.
Friendly Reminders:
Thank you for your support. You make our learning possible! Take care, Ms. Casey Below you will find the two notes that were sent home this week. I will be posting information about our gym and library schedule over the next few days.
