We have been focusing on addition and subtraction strategies with numbers up to 20
We are continuing to develop our reading and writing skills. We take time each day to write between 3-5 complete sentences. Students are encouraged to write at often as they can, using strategies (i.e., the word wall, sounding out, rereading) independently to improve their work.
We will begin this new unit after March break!
We have library this Wednesday. Please send in all books!
Class Goal: Begin to write in our agendas independently on a daily basis!
We will begin working towards this goal this week :)
Report Cards were sent home last Thursday. As always, please feel free to contact should you have any questions regarding your child's report card. I am extremely proud of the progress that each student has made in their learning. They have met personal goals and are working towards new achievements. Despite their age, our class knows that learning is a progression and that everyone is at different places in this progression. As we always say, "What matters the most is that you are learning". We do not judge ourselves or others. We embrace the success that is happening and we welcome new challenges!

Our first library visit for 2019 will be this Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019. Please send back any library books that you have at home.
Students are beginning to independently select books at their individual reading level and read them during “Read to Self” time. Also, please continue to encourage your child to read and write at home on a regular basis.

Dear Grade 1 Families,
The learning and development that has taken place since September has been outstanding. We have not only focused on academic skill development but we have also taken the time to grow as individuals who care about our local and global community. Our little group is made up of 18 respectful, empathetic, and collaborative individuals. I can't wait to see where our learning takes us in the new year!
Here are some topics that interest us:
I can't thank you enough for the support and encouragement that you have given our class over the past few months. Our learning truly would not be possibly without you. I hope you and your families enjoy this special time of the year!
Warm wishes and Merry Christmas!
Please join us this Friday, December 21st, 2018 at 9:30 AM for our Christmas Concert! We have been working very hard over the past month to create a special performance for you! Thank you to all that have already sent in a set of reindeer antlers for their child. Some students have asked if they could wear a Santa hat instead. My answer to this is… OF COURSE! Students are welcome to wear whatever they feel most comfortable in (reindeer antlers or Santa hat). If possible, please send either item in by Tuesday. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding our Christmas concert.
We have started to build our homes for Panda!
The Christmas Season is in full swing and our classroom is filled with Christmas spirit. Each day we take time to read story from our Advent calendar. These stories are helping us to understand the true meaning of Christmas.
Students worked together to create this note for you.
Dear Moms, Dads, and Families,
To make our Christmas Concert more magical, we were hoping to each wear a set of reindeer antler headbands (the ones that are found at the dollar store) and red and green outfits. We have been working really hard to create a special dance for the ones we love and we can’t wait to share this gift with you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we love you. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Lots of love,
The Grade 1 Friends
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding our Christmas concert. If possible, we ask that the reindeer antler headbands be sent in by Tuesday, December 18th. This allows students the opportunity to practice our performance with them. Thank you!
We have started procedural writing! This week we wrote about how to get dressed for winter
We are continuing to explore 3D shapes
We are starting construction! This week we spent time creating blueprints for our Panda homes. We created a list of materials, fasteners, objects, properties, and characteristics that we would like to see in our structures.
We are continuing to work on our reading and writing skills. Our daily practice is paying off! We are noticing a difference in our skills :)
We are moving on to 3D shapes. Ask you child:
From now until Christmas, each student will have the opportunity to bring home one of our advent bags. In the bag you will find an advent wreath, candles, songs, stories, and a journal. Please take some time to go through this bag with your child, reading the stories and creating a family entry in the journal. Students will be sharing their journal entry with the class. Please send back the advent bag (and everything within it) the next day to ensure that each of our students has the opportunity to enjoy this special activity with their family.
Math: We have started our study of 2D shapes. We have been...
Please continue to practice our old and new WWW's at home as they are extremely important in helping your child learn how to read.
Our field trip was amazing! We had the opportunity to explore different types of technologies that help to make life a bit easier throughout the seasons (snowshoes, sleds, bikes, fans, etc.). We were able to participate in a workshop that helped us to better understand how the sun, and the earth’s proximity to the sun, impacts our seasons. Best of all, we were given the opportunity to learn alongside our friends. We were able to ask each other questions, engage in activities, and make lasting memories.
We are wrapping up our unit on patterning and moving on to 2D and 3D shapes!
Here is a breakdown of the skills we are working on in class:
We will begin building our homes for Panda towards the end of next week. We are still looking for some materials to build our homes. We really appreciate what has been sent in so far. Thank you!
Here is a list of what we are still looking for:
Thank you for your ongoing support!
